So I just bought a new 4 core Sandy Bridge iMac tonight and now this news breaks. Is ARM actually building anything in any way shape or form that competes with the Intel X86 stuff right now or is this just vaporware at this point?

i think they will gain some substantial ground
having the ability to use the pda phone as an ipod would not be out of the question but solely a ipod phone ? i think they would be cutting their profits to a certain age group of potential buyers
Yeah exactly, I totally agree. I've never been turned on by the iPhone/iPod 2-in-1 rumours. To me, iLife integration and conferencing is way more important. I actually prefer they keep the two (iPod+iPhone) separate. I don't want my music listening to be disturbed by calls.

Everyone with an iphone is paying at least $840 a year for the privilege of using it, and if all you wanted was cell phone service you could pay half that. So if you think it's too expensive, don't buy it; but I don't know why so many feel they have to act so outraged over the cost.

I have purchased 4 cheap Dell's 14", and 3 HP Tablets. The cheapest tablets I could find, and still get the job done, were ~$1400. They can jump to $2000 in a heartbeat.
Businesses are now looking to capture data where it has been previously been overlooked. True, many industries have been automating their field operations for a number of years. Examples are delivery and service. But, there is so much more that can be done.
My company has experimented with various PDA's, Cingular 8125's, etc. But, we really need a device capable of running applications, not just email. So, I have created new, scaled-down, versions of the applications, suitable for low bandwidth conditions. Then we install Citrix Metaframe Client on the tablet. That allows us to run on OSX, Linux or Windows based tablets. The only traffic between the tablet and our Citrix servers is keystrokes, mouse movements and events, and screen refreshes. It is pretty tidy.
The main issue is the tablets. There is just not many good choices out there, or they are too expensive. These computers will take some abuse and have a higher likelihood of theft. So, I figure the cost will need to be amortized over 2 years (mean) of service life. Each unit will also require a Cingular (or equivalent) connection. That is ~$50/month. So, this is getting rather expensive, but it should not have to.
All of the components would be low-end and 1-2 generations old. Basically, this is a wireless thin-client, but with enough additional resources to act as a low-end laptop.

I agree that the convergence of data cap limits by commodity access providers and the evolving cloud of data are directly at odds, but ultimately the way around that will come from large grid wifi solution. Google has already started trying to do this.. and they and others will eventually make it happen the less available the current home and wiress providers are... You will be able to get wireless access in most places for free and use as much data as you want... The way the current bandwidth providers are going, it is absolutely going to happen.
They are going to essentially create their own demise. Yes bandwidth usage is going up, but the providers need to figure out how to keep up and stay with the changing times. Instead they are going in the opposite direction. These concerns about having all your data in the cloud and then streaming it is legitimate given current and future caps by providers... Like I said though, ultimately it will be blown off by a consortium of the content providers who want people to access them as much as possible. Not to burst your bubble, but isn't the 360 a closed system, over 32 million sold and if you are found hacking it to play pirated games your account is locked/cancelled and you can't play online anymore?
Apple aren't the only company who see the benefits of a closed system, right or wrong most other phone/console devices have some system in place to stop the user from having total access to it, even Android phones can be closed systems when the phone carrier/handset maker makes it so.
I do agree with having the makers of the software and hardware putting these systems in place, but I also think that the user (if they are smart enough) should be allowed to hack/jailbreak or whatever without fear of reprisals. But as I said earlier, if you do hack/jailbreak one of these closed systems and you brick your device it should be on your head

That came out of the blue. Running current applications on the next Rosetta would probably mean a negligible loss in speed. It does not matter, as native software will be iOS based and there is a thriving market for those already.
It all brings back memories of the PPC days. Apple must be confident about their ability to keep up with advancements by Intel and AMD. Considering the pace the iPad and iPhone processors have been getting upgraded I would guess that they can do it.

I suspect THIS is why HP chose to use a 9.7" 4:3 display on their TouchPad tablet. When all of Asia is stamping out iPad screens it would be a lot easier for HP to acquire iPad panels, using the manufacturer's economies of scale, than to have them manufacture different panels alongside iPad panels.

Then run downstairs to the Media cube, finger on button guessing when they can start to play. I therefore think that front row will gain an interface onto the ITMS so that media can be bought from the comfort of the sofa. This will kick off the actual download from upstairs computer and the front row interface will show when the user can start the movie.
That wud be a really nice feature IMO. BTW there is another simple solution for the Apple movie store to score over it`s rival. I posted my thoughts earlier in this thread but it seems that the post got buried and not a lot of people saw it. So I m quoting myself here. Please forgive me.:o
Apple has over 150 stores in US(or is it 250?). So is it possible if someone wants to Buy or rent a movie he just goes to any of these stores(which will have Optic fibre connectivity with the online store) and download the desired movie on his iPod/Laptop/mini taking no more than 10 minutes. Now this might not sound that great but it should definitely up the sales of iFlicks by atleast 10-15% IMO. All these stores are located in prime locations in big cities. There is a huge number of footfalls in and around these stores. I dont live in US. But if I did and had such a store nearby I`d definitely be renting/buying atleast thrice as much movies than I`d otherwise even if I had a 10 Mbps connection.
It`s just a thought and it might not really be possible. But if possible it can be one of those nice little extras which can help Apple gain on Amazon.

If you buy a phone and decide to do the same in the background\wallpaper, that's your right too. What's next, Apple forcing you to only buy their cases? Looks like OS X Server has been removed from Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 as it is now available as a separate download "Mac OS X Lion Server Developer Preview 2"
