I don't think they have anything to fear for quite a while. iTunes movies downloads are the digital equivalent to UMD. It's cool for Apple to be able to sell a movie for your iPod, but I don't see the practical use yet. You can't watch it on your T.V. (without spending $300 on Apple's upcoming iTV), you can't burn it to DVD, watching it full screen on a Mac or PC is not going to be as crisp as on a T.V., and the extra features aren't there. Quite frankly really who wants to hold an iPod for 2-3 hours to watch a movie anyway? Apple is going to have to offer something more useful for this to really catch on.

The GOP claimed that the the Democrats were overspending, but they failed to address how much worse things would be had they not done all the things to fix the mess left over from their president and party leadership. (A president who started the bailouts and is responsible for the highest budget ever). The GOP did not address this... I wonder why.

By the way, we could cut the deficit in half with one simple act, all while preserving necessary services and relief for the hardest hit. End the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.

I've found a couple places difficult so far, too. I just beat 2-1 last night so I'm not very far along. I would have played more but I wanted to get my wife playing it. She didn't want to. She said, "It doesn't interest me." Then I finally talked her into playing it and she sat in there for over half an hour going "Cool!"

Word is far more productive for most people IMO because Pages just isn't a word processor. I haven't used Pages all that much and I don't own it so I suppose I can't really complain about it too much but when I have dabbled with it, it's come across as a little over-simplified. It might just be because I'm used to Office apps which are admittedly pretty bloated but nevertheless, Pages just gives the impression of being underdone and kind of useless for most people.

I fail to see how it "just isn't a word processor?" I'm fairly amazed at the amount of negative responses this program has received, especially after Apple set the example with Keynote 1 and the glorious reception of version 2.

Pages is a godsend for me. I'm not sure what you people are smoking but writing is not about buttons, formatting, and margins. At the heart of writing is simplicity, I believe, and it seems a lot of people become troubled and even distraught at the apparent lack of "function." Sounds a lot like the first impressions PC users get of Macs...

Writing is a craft like art. You don't hear graphic artists complain about their palettes! I'll never understand why people want toolbars; confusing, myopic icons that march on in an endless, tyrannical parade across your screen. I despise nothing more than looking for what I'm trying to do in Word. Is it hidden behind this arrow? Maybe if I right-click? Alas.

Perhaps, then, Pages is for a different kind of writer. I write a lot of poetry and fiction, personally, and the less distraction I have on my screen the better. There are times I simply cannot interact with Word on a creative level, unless I close every window and button... so I might as well be using TextEdit.

I also fail to see how Word on the Mac is any different, or better, than Word on the PC. It looks prettier and has the same ****** GUI. What of it?

Word's only saving grace is its AutoSave if you ask me.

Pages and Number are TRASH compared to Word and Excel(especially excel)

    Keynote is actually pretty good!

Dont be a uninformed fanboy. k? Thanks

Pages and Numbers are much easier to use, and far nicer to look at than Office. If I don't need the horsepower I prefer iWork. If I do need the horsepower I have Office 2003 running on a late 2009 mini that is Windows 7 only. Office 2003 works great with W7, and it's not all blue looking like some of the newer versions.

As usual Windows runs MS software much better than Mac OS does.

Well, I'd like to get my hands on a DS, but cash is a bit tight. I'm hoping someone would be interested a trade for (or buy outright) a nice, older, PC.

    - P3-1ghz,
    - 256mb RAM,
    - 10gb HDD (I can most likely dig up another 10-20gb HDD to add),
    - CD-ROM (I have a CD-RW drive of unknown speed/quality I can include as well),
    - NVidia TNT2 GPU,
    - network card, modem, keyboard, mouse.
    - I have a 19" CRT that I haven't used in awhile for someone local (in the Lansing, MI area).
    - Has Win98, Office 97, and some other software if you want it (Visual -Basic, some older PC games), with licenses of course.
    - Could also install pretty much any Linux variant for ya, if you wanted. I have Ubuntu on there right now.
    - I would be happy to include a joystick (uses the old fashioned "game port") and/or a USB gamepad.

Figured it was worth a shot. :) Anyone who would be interested in CDs, VHS tapes, comic books (decent collection, including the full Superman Doomsday series), or some Star Wars "memorabilia" (toys still in packaging from the mid-90's re-release of the first 3 movies) in trade should PM for a list of those things as well!

It doesn't really show any new features. Probably just a test build of iOS multitasking before they settled on the UI.

Before all you Apple fannies disagree with this; just remember Apple is trying to sue everyone else too.

    It's all ridiculous.

When you release the kinds of game-chaining products that Apple does, I'm kind of inclined to look the other way. Why not. Apple's earned special treatment for the time being. That is, for the time being.

Might doesn't make right. But being exceedingly awesome, does.

I know it sounds unfair, but **** it. Apple's changed the entire conditions of the game.

Given that universal versions of Adobe's software are not universal yet (Or at least most) does anyone know exactly how much slower any particular Adobe program (photoshop, illustrator, etc.) runs on an Intel Mac compared to a PPC Mac? I've heard it runs slower, but HOW much slower?

Heh. Someone else had that problem. You have to be one of us, muhahahahaha!

    >I personally feel that OS X and the whole Mac experience is worth the difference for a computer that will without a doubt whip the pants off that Dell and continue to do it after it the Dell is dead and gone.

I think Gatelaid may suffer first: Sleep forever standing up, like a cow. :D

OS X absolutely *kills* all the other OSs, as most of us know (especially with 10.2). You won't see that with a Windoze update. Upgrading to ME is sort of a 50:50 deal, whether you upgrade successfully, or upgrade in heck. And constant Windoze upgrades come in the fashion of "kill a bug/get one free". But as long as you don't have upgrader cards or such with your Mac, OS 10.2 really doesn't need so many updates, except for add-ons and stuff.

I don't think anyone doubts the machine can do the expose effect (the iPad 1 does it in Safari just fine).

There are plenty of reasons it might have been turned down for their final switcher implementation. One, the final iOS allows a variable number of programs to remain open depending on their memory requirements. The expose implementation implies that 9 can be open. That's inconsistent UI. Two, as others have mentioned, you can't always tell the difference between apps at a glance from little screenshots. So they went with icons in the end.

The current implementation is also inconsistent in the UI department, in that the same action and will result in two different actions.

In some cases, a hold > jiggle > close will result in an app shutting down, and other times the same action set (hold > jiggle > close) will result in an app being deleted.

    Go Away troll!

The current system is an embarrassment, relative to others (e.g. WebOS). Several things wrong with it, for example it does not indicate the extent that a background app is in use. In OS X, open apps are denoted with a white orb (or a triangle before 10.5), but is the same done here? No. Also, apps should be prioritized according to usage, for example if you have a GPS app running in the background drawing power, it should come up first in the system tray (and have a special look) to show it is a running process and needs to be shut down when not in use. The current system of showing apps as the same, no matter if they are in a sleep state or in a active state, and letting the user guess which is which is a failure.

Seriously, go look at WebOS and then come back and tell me the iOS presentation is anything other that a generation or more behind the state-of-the-art.

I never said it scaled better. In fact, I said the opposite.

However, the fact that Mac OS X's kernel is *NOT* BSD, but Mach remains. Mach is a microkernel and a freaking good one, but Mach microkernels that OS X uses has poor task switching; I'm not sure if the Mach microkernels in OS X is based on GNU/Mach (based off CMU's Mach) or the actual Mach microkernel from Carnegie-Mellon. So some of the scalability of UNIX is lost through this. But trust me, UNIX scales way beyond Windows. I've said Windows isn't for computers with more than 32 processors--that's what UNIX is for--pure science--no one needs the crap from Mac OS X and Windows to do science and mathematics research. Real men use UNIX on 8192-way systems. :) :D :)

    Thanks for the replies.

I can't find anything like that in the log.

I think it's just getting sloppy due to it's age. It's an old 2GHz intel core 2 duo with a 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 and the hard drive was getting close to full. I deleted close to 4 GB of apps, gonna put the pictures somewhere safe and ease the load a little more too.

I prefer to think that it is just another example of how Microsoft is becoming more and more irrelevant in the consumer market. They will be the IBM of the '10s.

Obama (and the Chinese Premier) had a high profile meeting with Balmer only last month (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/10/AR2010121006226.html).

Why was Steve Jobs snubbed? ;)

Isnt Jobs a vegan? Cancer or not, not eating any animal products whatsoever is going to make you quite thin. If for no other reason than most things have animal products thus there just isnt a lot to eat.Being a vegan is probably what's wrong with him. Friends don't let friends eat veggie burgers !!!!!

My impression is that Apple does not want to tell you what to watch on your iPhone. ... They don't want it to be known for pornography. ... Another important thing to consider is that in today's world it doesn't take much for a media frenzy to develop if your product is linked to some kind of sensational crime or scandal.....

What does ANY of this have to do to Apple rejecting a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist from the App Store?

    Hi everybody,

at the moment I've got an old non unibody MacBook Pro with an ACD like in the picture below. As apple has switched to the unibody models they started to put a black bezel on the the ACDs and a black keyboard to the MacBooks. What I love about the silver-only-design is, that the content on the screen is much more dominant, the MacBook and the ACD seems to fade away when you are working with them. I just wanted to know what you think about the new vs. old design.

    Regards

    Dave
